During the 1800's the Log Cabin quilt pattern
always used red as the center square to
represent the heart or hearth of the home.
During the Civil War they would color this block
black and hang the quilt on the clothesline to
signal runaway slaves that "This is a safe house."
Note: This is a ledgend that has not been proven because none of these quilts survived the war.
